elf-Portrait with an Axe - Landscape

The face breaks into fragments within a composition crossed by an axe. Hatching echoes the cut, scattering gazes and shaping an inner landscape. A V-shaped structure leaves room for scenes at the edges: another self-portrait cries out on the left; buildings in Amiens anchor the right-hand side in a familiar place. Made in 1995, this intuitive drawing gives form to an inner state that was still difficult to name.

Original hand-drawn work. The crying figure is based on a photograph of the artist, also used for The Cry, a drawing from the same period.
