The Scream

A dark vertical mass stands out against a scratched background. A tear in the paper runs through the composition, separating the swept white area from the compact black. At first, the figure seems almost absent, absorbed by the contrasts and the material. Then a bodily presence emerges within the dark mass and, once perceived, becomes difficult not to see. The scream is not represented by a face or an open mouth: it becomes a graphic tension running directly through the image.
