Saint Sebastian
Oil on canvas · 50 × 60 cm · 1998 · Signed
A figure uses a violin bow to play upon his own arm. Red streaks run across the upper torso. Saint Sebastian is not depicted at the moment of his death, but during the interval following the first ordeal he survived. The arrows and executioners have disappeared: the movement of the bow becomes the gesture of a wounded body that nevertheless continues to live. Painted during my father’s illness, while we waited to learn whether he would go into remission, the work carries that uncertainty and contradiction: a body under threat, yet still alive.
