The bow

An inverted self-portrait. The upside-down figure occupies the centre of a scene structured by a red background, a blue area and a pale oval. Painted during a brief return to art after a long absence, The Bow turns that return into a gesture. To return to painting is to step back into the arena; the figure enters it by taking a bow. The inverted body expresses both the humility of returning and the decision to begin again.
